Congrats on Your New Home

This card is for the latest Library challenge – Watership Down. I read this book ages and ages ago and only remember being very sad while reading it. I did refresh my memory by reading a synopsis – and from that decided my card would be a “new home” card (the only bunny stamps I own are of the chocolate variety, lol).

Congrats on your New Home | by karen @ carefree creations

I put my card together first with layers of cardstock but it was way to plain. I replaced a couple layers and the home with pattern paper…much better!

Thanks for taking a peek!

congratulations

Butterfly Happiness

It is time for another CASology challenge. Check out the latest challenge – Foil!

Here is my take:

Butterfly Happiness | by karen @ carefree creations

I love the look of foil, but I always have a hard time getting it to work. To do this card, I used a glue technique that I learned from Jennifer McGuire. I still had to stamp and foil it twice to get the rays mostly covered. {After making my card, I found this video from Minc where I learned a couple tips that may help me in the future! AND THEN I found this video from Jennifer where I learned I could use embosed images. You may see more foiling from me soon!}

Anyway…usually when I think foil, I think elegant, but I wanted something fun. I chose some bold spring colors because it reinforced the “happiness” sentiment.

Hey, Chick

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge:

And here is my take:

Hey, Chick | by karen @ carefree creations

These bold colors had me all over the place – tons of ideas! I settled on this chicken set (from, um, last year, that I hadn’t inked up yet). I love the fun images and the size of the images is also quite good for a cas stamper! I hadn’t inked them because they are not photopolymer and I can’t ever tell where I’m stamping. Instead of masking and crossing my fingers, I chose to fussy cut the images. I adhered them, as I like to do, with just a bit of glue to their bellies so the rest can leave nice little shadows. I did add a bit of shadow under their feet with a Copic – just to reinforce their grounding.

Because the images are so bright, and the biggest thing on the card, their design weight was making the card feel very lopsided. I added a strip of Bermuda cardstock on the left to help balance it out. It still isn’t perfectly balanced, but at least it feels a bit more anchored. If I was to do it again, I’d probably not stamp the sentiment on the panel, and, instead, put the Bermuda strip over the white panel and stamp the sentiment up that.

I did toy with the idea of stamping a chicken wire background on the card base, but I felt that was a step too far for cas (for me – everyone has their own definitions and it certainly wouldn’t have looked bad, I’m just trying to honor the challenge).

I hope you join us at CAS Colours & Sketches!

A Little About the Challenge: This weekly challenge is posted on Tuesday, and alternates between color and sketch (if there is a 5th week in the month you get the double dose of color & sketch).

Spread Joy

Today I am playing along with the Addicted to CAS: Birds challenge.

Here is my card:

Spread Joy | by karen @ carefree creations

I have a few bird sets, but I decided to use this one as it hasn’t seen ink yet. The set is kinda big, but I was still able to keep it CAS.

I chose this flower because it snugged into the corner. There are two sizes of bird; I selected the smaller image. I even chose the one-line sentiment to maximize the white space.

In picking my colors, I knew I wanted a purple flower. Once I picked those colors, I kept the rest of the colors jewel toned as well.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Shiny Hello

It is time for another CASology challenge. Check out the latest challenge – Bug!

Here is my take:

Shiny Hello | by karen @ carefree creations

I went with the obvious interpretation of the cue – mostly because I wanted to break out my Twinkling H2Os!

Since I knew I would be watercoloring, I stamped my image with a Palette ink first. After coloring the image (and letting it air dry), I then overstamped with Brillance to get the dark black color (love having a MISTI!).

Here is a close up of the shimmer:

Christmas White Foliage

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge:

And here is my take:

Christmas White Foliage | by karen @ carefree creations

When I first looked at the sketch, I immediately thought about this cover plate!

Easy peasy card – so quick to put together. But the gold embossing with all the white is so elegant.

Rainbow Birthday Icons

Papertrey’s Make it Monday #314 is about using the color wheel to make a rainbow card. Here is my take:

Birthday Rainbow | by karen @ carefree creations

I love rainbows! I don’t stamp enough of them…so I had to play with this challenge! I started out with pale colors and added slightly deeper hues as accents.

My Precious

Today’s card is for The Library Challenge where the inspiration is The Hobbit! Squee!

Here is my card:

Rare & Precious Friends | by karen @ carefree creations

I’m fairly certain it is obvious, but my inspiration is Smaug.

I found a free clipart image of a pile of gold coins. I printed it and hand-cut it out. The cute lil dragon was colored with Copics. After that I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. Finding a sentiment so that I could actually use the card, but that made sense with the image was a challenge.

I settled on this sentiment because, well it has the word precious – just couldn’t pass that up! :)

After struggling with how to put it all together, I found the layout in my inspiration file. It is an old Two Peas in a Bucket sketch.

My Lucky Charm

Today I am playing along with Addicted to CAS: Luck.

My Lucky Charm | by karen @ carefree creations

Ultra simple here! I stamped and colored the images then die cut them. They are adhered to the card with tiny bits of foam tape.

St Patrick’s Hat

It is time for another CASology challenge. Check out the latest challenge – Abstract!

Here is my take:

St Patrick's Hat | by karen @ carefree creations

I had lots of ideas for this challenge cue. I finally decided to make a card that implies a thing, but isn’t shaped like it [you know, abstract] (for instance: pig, snowman, or reindeer). I tried a few things, unsuccessfully, but finally got a leprechaun’s hat to work.

The buckle is a die that is not completely straight in the inner corners, but I just trimmed it with scissors.
