Book Reviews

My favorite thing to do – yes even more than crafting – is reading. With all my reading, I still have lousy language and spelling skills. I hope to improve both by writing reviews. I’ll post my reviews here – keeping it off my “craft” blog.

March 25, 2009 – Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand – I loved this book! To me, there are two things going on in the book – the story and the philosophy. Of course the story is about the philosophy, but I can read the book and separate them. The story was very well written (though long in some parts) and very engaging (I read that monster of a book in just a couple days). The philosophy is pretty cool and I would love to read more about it (in practical terms – practical for those who are thinkers, but not necessarily inventors). I’ve read Fountainhead, but I didn’t get the philosophy out of it.

March 8 2009 – The Professor and the Madman – This is a story about two men who worked on the Oxford English Dictonary. My husband was given this book years ago. I always wanted to read it, but I wasn’t sure how “brainy” it was. It was actually a great read. I did have to look up many many words, but it never felt pretentious. The Oxford Dictionary was just a minor role – it is how the two men met – the story is more about the lives of the two men, one of whom was in a mental institute.

September 30 – I was excited to finally get the last piece of the trilogy in my hands! Except now he has decided it can’t be done in just 3 books – now I have to wait for the fourth (and maybe final) book. I enjoyed the story of Brisingr, but honestly, it seems to be getting longer for no really good purpose.

September 18, 2008 – Yesterday I read The Beach House by Jane Green. This is another quick and easy read. It was very predictable storyline. While it was a nice story, it was not very believable.

September 15, 2008 – I recently read The Writing Class by Jincey Willett. The story is a mystery that starts in a college writing class. This was a fun book! I loved the wit and humor throughout the book as well as the author’s writing style. The book is a quick and easy read. The characters weren’t very deep so I didn’t care too much about them, but the writing style won me over. This would be a great book if you need diversion, but don’t want to think to hard.
