CAS Colours & Sketches #18

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Birthday by the Seashore

This is such an easy sketch that I know I will use it over and over (heck, I posted a card last weekend that used the sketch – you had a preview and didn’t know it, hee hee).

My colors were very much inspired by last week’s color challenge – but I went with Crumb Cake, Soft Suede, and Riding Hood Red.

For those of you who know my mom – this card will be in the April camp.

Framed Hello

CAS Colours & Sketches #17

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Framed Hello

Seeing this color combo, I really wanted just a pop of the red. So I did my card using the neutrals and then added two little red rhinestones (yes red, I know they look orange in the photo).

I really love that frame!

CAS - Colours&Sketches #16

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Tiffany's Box

I am so happy with how this card turned out! I got the idea as I was browsing my index looking for stamps to use for this sketch. When I came across the Ribbons & Bows set – I knew just what I would do.

This card may be clean and simple, and actually relatively easy, but it was NOT quick! So much embossing! I started by embossing the large bow, then I went back with a line/stripe stamp. I’m not sure it matters, but I did use an Xacto to scrape off the embossing powder (pre-heating) from where the line went over the bow (I didn’t want it to look like the lines were on top of the bow).

** ETA – So my mom asked me why I didn’t stamp the stripes first and then the bow (to save from scraping away the powder). Well, I like to do things the hard way! Seriously though, I had a couple reasons. First, the stripe stamps I used are not long enough to go the whole distance of the card (I do have the set by PTI that is longer, but the smallest width in that set was just a bit too wide); so I thought the bow would provide a good “break” point for the lines (if I had tried to connect them perfectly, it would never have worked and the connection point would surely have fallen in an open space and been more visible – this way I had control over where the potential goofs would occur). Second, I don’t do a lot of embossing, so I didn’t know what embossing over embossing would do/look like and I really really wanted the bow to be “in the front”. If I had more time I would have experimented more.

When it came time to do the sentiment, I actually started out by doing a pale grey frame and dark grey sentiment, but something about it just felt off. So I die cut another label and this time embossed the frame in white – definitely the better choice for this card.

Razzle Roses

CAS#15

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Razzled Roses

I went easy-peasy for my card. If you give me pink and green – my instinct is to stamp flowers! My flowers are Pink & Razzleberry; my leaves are Pear – the bottom layer stamped off and the top layer full-strength.

I used the oval Designer Frame embossing folder to help anchor the flowers and sentiment on my panel. I used dimensionals to adhere the panel to my card base – which is textured card stock.

I really wish I had an embossing folder that would give plain card stock the textured look – sometimes that subtle texture is the perfect final touch. If anyone knows of such a product – please let me know!!

Useless fact: my Stamp-a-ma-jig is Razzleberry colored 🙂

Hello Sunshine

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> #14 – sketch.

CAS Colours & Sketches #14

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Hello Sunshine

I think this card was inspired as much by the sketch as by the fact I got a new light bulb (I made the card last week). I’ve never considered myself affected by light, but I did NOT feel like crafting with that dismal yellow bulb!

Anywho! To keep my card clean and simple I knew the “circles” would need to be stamped. In scanning my stamp index I saw the sun rays stamp set and knew that would be perfect.

I had a few ideas for sentiments, but none worked in the space. I decided to use this large die – a bonus that the companion stamp set had the word “sunshine” in it! I chose to use the negative cut because I really love the shadow effect (you can’t have sunshine without shadows).

CAS Colours & Sketch - Challenge #13

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Birthday Butterflies

I love Sahara Sand – it is such an awesome neutral. I took advantage of that by using it to stamp my background. The butterflies are inked with both Starfruit & Tangerine and then misted to help the colors blend.

The ribbon, which matches Sahara Sand perfectly is from my stash (no idea where it originally came from) – and I only have about 1 more use left – ack!

Strawberry Sweetness

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> #12 – sketch.

2013-02-14

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations: Strawberry Sweetness

I’ll admit it – this sketch stumped me at first. But I did it! All the pieces are there – they just aren’t on their own layer.

I started by trimming a white panel to 3 5/8″ x 5 1/2. I used temporary adhesive to attach it to my green card base (I used temporary at first so if I messed it up it would be easier to start over). Then I stamped the leaves.

The strawberries are all die cut – with the one on the right popped up. I think because they are red and draw your eye, they keep the bones of the sketch (representing the circles).

I’m really happy with the final card – it is so cheery!

I used the large floral image from Elements of Style and stamped it all over the background panel. Then just added a bit of ribbon and a frame for the sentiment.

Birthday Blues

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> #10 – colors & sketch. Since this is a bonus week in the month – you get both a sketch and colors to work with!

2013-01-31

And here is my take:

Karen @ Carefree Creations: Birthday Blues

I’m not normally one to combine challenges, but when I do, I start with the colors – because, to me, they dictate the type of card I’ll be making. Though I will admit that if I can make a birthday card, that is what I’ll do (and did in this instance).

I did have some other thoughts – blue bringing to mind snow or sympathy, but once I found this sentiment I knew the blues would work for a birthday card.

I didn’t want the arrows to overpower the sentiment, so I made sure they were the lightest shade of blue. The frame is medium blue, and the sentiments are dark.

The frame is popped-up on dimensionals – but everything (including the framed sentiment) is stamped directly on the white card base.

Gold Star

2013-01-24

And here is my take:

kth_encouragement_proudGoldStar

I’m not quite ready to make Valentine cards, so I looked through my stash to see what other large shape I could use. Since I needed an academic-based congrats card, I went with a star.

It is hard to tell in the photo but the stamped star image on the die-cut star is gold embossed.
