Poinsettia Holiday

Card 6 of 7:

Poinsettia Holiday - by karen @ carefree creations

OK, so I got a little artsy with this one…I love it!!

I really wanted to do a poinsettia card and, no idea why, but doing a color wash behind the flower came to my mind. Instead of a color wash though, I decided to break out my distress inks (still getting used to having/using them).

After inking the background I flicked water to add that final artsy touch.

The sentiment is gold embossed and the flower is popped up.

This shade of distress ink (pine needles) went really well with the old Forest Foliage cardstock from SU – thankfully I had a handful of sheets. Not sure what I’m going to do when I run out…that was a fabulous color!

Cozy Holiday - by karen @ carefree creations

Very simple and quick card. I started with the sentiment – love that it called for front & center treatment. Framed it with a bow and poinsettia.

Oh and I think this is the first time I used the Delicata ink – but it definitely won’t be the last…such a luxurious ink!

Sketchy Halloween

I’m just a bit late for my DT post at CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. The good thing is that YOU still have a few days to play along! Check out the latest challenge: #91 – sketch.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #91

And here is my take:

Sketchy Halloween by karen @ carefree creations

I had this idea in my head for a week before the challenge but I just couldn’t carve out the time until this weekend.

The card base is 3 3/4 wide and the black panel is 4 1/4 – so it will fit perfectly in an envelope.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #89

And here is my take:

Best Wishes - by karen @ carefree creations

I had many ideas for this sketch – another versatile one. But when I found out my niece just got engaged, I had to go with this idea!

I used some old paper flowers for the border – but you could easily stamp and cut them, or use die-cuts or punches. These flowers I got in the bridal section of a place like Michaels (it has been so long ago it very well could have been that store, but I just don’t remember). They have the most wonderful pearl shine to them! I thought about adding tiny gems to the centers when I was done, but I really prefer this soft, understated look.

For the sentiment, I didn’t have much in the way of ‘Congratulations’ that would fit in an oval (especially that orientation), so I chose to go with ‘Best Wishes’. The image has lots of flourishes around the actual words. I originally stamped it full-on in a dark grey ink, but it was just too much. Instead, I inked the stamp with a soft grey ink and then went back with a medium grey marker and colored the words. I’m really happy with how that turned out!

Hmmm….I guess now I can use this engagement as a reason to look into wedding sets (and maybe even baby) – I haven’t had a need for them until now!

Oh, and the curve is just hand-drawn on the back-side of the pattern paper and then cut-out by hand — which should explain why my curve goes the opposite way than the sketch; I drew it correctly on the back forgetting it would be flipped when I turned the paper right-side up (sadly, I did think about it before I drew it, and I still got it wrong!).

Summer Simplicity

Summer Simplicity - by karen @ carefree creations

OneLayerSimplicityChallenge

There is a new challenge at One Layer Simplicity – summer color inspiration. I used the #5 scheme:

SimplicityOLC#8-shadesofsummer5

I also used an old sketch from Case This Sketch (#79).

The “birthday” that comes with the Wet Paint set just does NOT work with the “happy” (the spacing is all wrong to fit the way I would want). I was able to find a suitable replacement in another set…and this makes me happy!

I wanted the sentiment to stand out by being the one furthest to the left. Of course, happy is only 5 letters…so I needed a bit of filler on the right – hence the bit of sketched pennant.

To get the right side straight, I just masked off a 1/4 inch of the card base.

Patriotic Pedaling

Patriotic Pedaling - by karen @ carefree creations

This was sorta fun to create. I love this bicycle image but have a hard time using it (I think because it is so big). For this card, I used a flower stamp to create the fire works. And since the card wasn’t quite balanced, I decided to make it a funky edge so the sentiment could be up on the edge.

I admit using this edger die, in this manner, was really difficult. But I did some creative die-cutting (selective cutting by keeping the plates off the parts that shouldn’t be cut) and then hand cutting other parts.

Patriotic Circles

Patriotic Circles - by karen @ carefree creations

As of today I am all caught up creating my July 4th cards – but I’ll be posting them over the next few days.

I’m pretty happy with this one. I used a circle die and coordinating stamp set. Then I used a sentiment and repeated it over and over in the background with a light ink.

Reason to Smile

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #79

And here is my take:

Reason to Smile - by karen @ carefree creations

These sherbert-y colors are so wonderful. I wanted to do a summer popsicle card, but I don’t have any popsicle stamps (OK, I have one, but it is too small for what I wanted to do). So I had to find another idea.

I looked through my inspiration file and came up with a dozen or so ideas. While trying to make one idea work, I designed this card instead (yeah, that’s how my brain works).

To complete the sentiment panel, I started by die-cutting the Phrase Play die from white paper. Then I backed the “you are my…” part with black paper. My original plan was to just leave that part of the sentiment so that it looked sorta-graphic (with out the letter middles), but I don’t know if it is just me or because it is a scripty font, but I decided I needed those little middle bits (thankfully I kept all the little pieces when I did the die-cutting). I popped the words back into place and use them to position the middle pieces.

The sub-sentiment (“reason to smile”) is stamped on the card base. I used a light pencil mark around the sentiment panel to make sure I didn’t get any flowers stamped so that they would show in that space.
