Hawaii Bound

Well our move date hasn’t changed in a few weeks, so I guess it is safe to finally publish it. We will be moving to Hawaii on January 5th! I am so excited! This will be a great experience for my young girls. This isn’t a permanent move – just 2 years. But I must say, now that the cold has come, I am so looking forward to warm weather year-round!

I have so much to do between now and then. Since I still haven’t completely unpacked from moving into our current house (which happened a couple years ago), there are things that I *know* we can get rid of. And since we will be coming back to this same house after Hawaii, I don’t want to get rid of everything, so I need to determine what goes with us and what gets stored.

I have been in a stamping slump ever since I realized I will only be able to bring a fraction of my stuff with me. So, as of today, I am officially on break! My blog will be neglected, but only until after we move. Of course, I’ll always be found on SCS!

This beautiful photo was taken by Dan Malewitz. You can see his wonderful work on his blog, Nature’s Wallpaper.

A New Nest

First off I have to give a great big thanks to Joyclynn who sent me a whole set of bird stamps. They are the cutest things! She sent them a couple weeks ago and I really wanted to use them, but I just haven’t been in the mood to stamp. But I found out a friend of mine just moved into a new place and I wanted to send her a congrats card. So I had to use the new bird set! One of the images had a bird in a nest – which of course made me immediately think of the “new nest” sentiment. On the inside of the card I stamped the branch image from the bird set. The image is watercolored – just ink and a brush.

Supplies:
Stamps: Bird (Inkadinkado), Sentiment (PTI), Alphabet-nest (Purple Onion);
Ink: Brown (Palette), Baja Breeze (SU), Cocoa (SU);
Paper: Kraft (SU), Vanilla (SU), Baja Breeze (SU), Manchester DSP (SU);
Other: Baja Ribbon (SU); Corner Rounder (to make scallops);

I made a card!

So last weekend was Word Card Making Day. Splitcoast had a day of challenges. I tried, but managed only one card. I do like the card – I did the sketch challenge…though my interpretation might be a bit loose 🙂  I got the idea for the circle accent from a commercial on tv.  I already had them cut when I decided to try this challenge. The free-form cutting and bright colors made me think fun. I always need birthday cards, so doing a b-day card was a no-brainer! I *love* this new Designer paper from Stampin’Up! – it is a great color scheme and some fun patterns. I free-form cut the strips and outlined them with a black pen – to match the circles. And all these free-form shapes made me think of the Doodle Alphabet set.

A couple nights ago I started on the thank you cards I needed to send with the goodies I’m sending to my contest winners (for the DSS program on SCS). I finally finished them today. I used a PageMaps sketch (Mar 08), and some neglected paper and rubber. This is a simple card, but I like it.

Finding My Mojo

I haven’t stamped in what feels like forever, but is probably more realistically only a week. I’m determined to get back in the groove. I had a card I needed to make and I hoped that would spark some other ideas.

The first card is a thank you. I knew I wanted to do a pine tree for this recipient, and I needed the card to be a long card. The pine reminded me of the holidays, so I pulled out some old SU paper. I went with green and blue so it didn’t feel quite so holiday-ish. I went with white accents to balance the dark feeling from using a brown base.  Silly me, though, I knew the paper was Olive, and I thought I grabbed the Olive marker, but I got the Artichoke instead…so yes, my tree doesn’t “go” with the paper…but by the time it really bothered me, it was done! The square behind the tree is cheap chipboard (i.e., cereal box) covered with Cocoa paper and sponged with white ink.

When I was done I definitely wanted to keep stamping, so I checked out some challenges and decided to do both the Mojo Monday challenge from Julee, and the OCC stitching challenge. This card is for my kiddo to take to a party.  When I looked at the Mojo sketch sideways, the optional triangle turned into a candle flame.  I recently appropriated an old pair of jeans into shorts for painting. I used the left over jean material and stitched a piece to Saffron cardstock. Then I stitched and sponged the edges of the Saffront layer. Since the cutting wasn’t too good on the jeans, I put everything on an angle.  I didn’t want to put accents at the bottom of the candle, like in the sketch, so instead I put eyelets throughout the candle. The flame is done with a teardrop punch which is then edged in red, sponged with orange, and stickled. I attached the flame with some wire. In retrospect, I should have used a brighter yellow or even pattern paper for the Saffron panel.

Pine Tree
Stamps: Lovely as a Tree (SU); Sentiment (Purple Onion);
Ink: Artichoke, Close to Cocoa (SU); white craft;
Paper: Close to Cocoa, Whisper White, Holiday Thyme DSP (SU);

Ink: Regal Rose, Bordering Blue, So Saffront markers (SU); white craft;

Other: white eyelets; wire; teardrop punch; stickles; machine stitching;

Supahstah

Mom needed a swap card for her upline meeting. I came up with an idea in my head, but when I tried it, it was horrible! But I didn’t want to give up. She came up with her own design for the swap, so I was free to use any supply/technique on this card.

My original design was just the wheel and a punched star. The punch in my mind was much much bigger than what is actually the SU punch.  So I got out my stash of chipboard sheets and I cut a bigger star. Then I covered it with Gesso for a base and Yoyo Yellow craft ink. I had to add ribbon to give the star an anchor and help separate it from the wheel image.

The center of the punched star is filled with a yellow button, yellow beads, and some clear microbeads to fill the leftover space.

Supplies:
Stamps: Classic Stars wheel (SU); Starlight (Verve);
Ink: Pacific Blue, Yoyo Yellow craft, Only Orange craft (SU);
Paper: White (PTI); Only Orange, Yoyo Yellow (SU);
Other: Pacific Striped grosgrain (SU), star and keytag punches (SU); button, chipboard (unknown); beads (SU);

Camp Cards

Since I am moving at the end of the year, I wanted to make sure my work projects for Mom were done early. These cards will be the projects for the October Stamp Camp. The cards are (1) Fall Friend, (2) Thank You (complement card to the bookmark), (3) Bookmark, (4) Christmas, and (5) Halloween. We don’t normally do 3D items during regular stamp camps, but with Christmas coming up, we wanted to show an easy gift idea. The bookmark was done at SU Convention this year.

Carefree Challenge

A few weeks ago I clicked on a link in Stacy’s signature (she’s a fellow coordinator in the SCS DSS group). The link was for Scentsy – a wickless scented candle company. I browsed a bit and found this really cool warmer and thought it would make a great inspiration piece.

Of course I had ideas immediately, but now, so late at night my mojo isn’t working. But I want to get this post written and scheduled for tomorrow (um, that would be today I guess) because my friends asked me too – and I never can say no, lol! I will be at school all day Friday, but hopefully when I get home I can upload my own interpretation.

Have fun ladies – I can’t wait to see what you do. Make sure you post a link to your creation here 🙂

Snazzy Zippers

My kiddos started school on Tuesday. They came home and told me that they saw TONS of other kids with their very same backpacks! Each of my kids even has another student in their class with the same (even same color) backpack and lunchbox. I decided I needed to help. So I pulled out my stamps, Xyron laminator, and wire and created zipper pulls. Now there should be no more confusion!

The zipper pulls for the backpack are the same for the lunchbox – but one side has an image and the other side their initials.

Supplies:
[Fish Pull]
Stamps: Kissy Fish, Giggle Alphabet (CTMH), Simple Alpha (PTI);
Ink: Pacific Point, Green Galore (SU);
Paper: Basic Black (SU), White (PTI);

Paper: Basic Black (SU), White (PTI);
Other: wire (SU), laminator (Xyron), circle cutter (CM);

Owls in a Tree

This card started with last week’s SCS Ways to Use it challenge. I stamped and colored the owls, but never got a chance to make a card with it. Then today Julee posted another mojo sketch and I was inspired!

Supplies:
Stamps: Owl Always Love You (GinaK), Beautiful Blooms (PTI-greeting), Island Blossoms (SU-leaves);
Ink: Noir (Palette), Close to Cocoa (SU);
Paper: Choco Chip, Close to Cocoa, Garden Green, Old Olive, Saffron Prints (SU), White (PTI);
Other: Colored Pencils, choco twill (SU);

Silhouette Spots

The final card for the September stamp camp uses Pocket Silhouettes – a new set that is also on special! Since our theme is “Get Ready for the Holidays” I wanted to go with a thank you card in fall colors. I tried a couple other things first (see below), but this is what I settled on. I really like it – a quick card, but still has dimension. After working on the other samples, getting to this place wasn’t hard – the left over circles from the other attempts were scattered on my desk and it was easy to envision this card.

After I made the final stamp camp card, I wanted to finish the cards I had started. I gave them up for different reasons, but I am very happy I went back and finished them!

My first attempt was to use the chipboard frame piece as a template to create the window, behind which the silhouettes can be seen. I tried many different things, but everything that I could think of to “finish” the card required non-SU stuff. I gave up. When I came back to it, I pulled out a tiny Prima flower in red and added a black brad, which made me think of this scrap of ribbon I had. Now, I know if I tried harder, I probably could have accomplished this card using SU supplies, so giving up was more of a lack of mojo!

This spotlight card was another attempt. I really liked where it was going, but it was getting too complicated. We try not to do too many layers, especially when the layers are only 1/16″ bigger, lol. It seems that even when all you have to do is tape the layers together, it takes too long. I love the color palette on this one (that sorta carried over to the final card, but with the brown taking such a smaller part in this card, it feels lighter). The green layer on this is the new Kiwi Kiss. Since SU doesn’t make brads for their InColors (I don’t know WHY?!!), I had to improvise. I found these Making Memory brads weren’t too off so I went with them.
