Take Care

by Karen @ carefree creations - Take Care

I created this card for the CASology challenge – Care

When I saw the cue card for the challenge, I knew I would do a “thinking of you” type card. I wanted to use soft soothing colors. I pulled out an old favorite – Sage Shadow and paired it with a soon-to-retire favorite – Baja Breeze. I chose purple because it supported the feeling I was going for.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Thanks, Teacher

I’m squeaking in a card for the Paper Smooches Sparks challenge – Anything Goes!

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Thanks Teacher

To do the chevron strip, I masked off my card base and repeatedly stamped the image. The apple is paper pieced and popped up.

The seeds on the apple are the brush tip from a Copic marker.

This is the last month of school and this week is teacher appreciation. Both my girls have multiple teachers so I need lots of cards this year (at least 10). I won’t get them done in time for this week, but I will have them done by the end of the month.

Thanks for taking a peek!

It is time for another For Your Inspiration challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> FYI45.

For Your Inspiration - Challenge #45

This picture is so dramatic and, despite the dark tones, I’m drawn to the light spots.

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Lighthouse

I kept my card to shades of grey – even sponging around the edges for the clouds.

To keep those light spots, I used a white colored pencil to color in the lighthouse and added some clear crystal rhinestones.

Graphic Birthday

CAS Colours & Sketches - Challenge 23

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - PTI Sketched Shapes

My first thought for these colors was a sports-themed card, but I don’t need any such card right now. So I did what I do when I have colors but no theme – graphic design.

This time I broke out the new Sketched Shapes by Maile Belles (for Papertrey Ink). This girl knows how to make clean and simple graphic cards! I am always in awe of her projects. I tried to channel a little of Maile’s style when I made this card.

I did change the So Saffron to Crushed Curry because I wanted the yellow to show up on the white background.

The card is a little narrower than a normal A2. The card base is 4 x 5.5. My original intent was to place the white panel against one side and let the blue peek around 3 edges, but this configuration looked much better.

Rainbow Chevrons

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> #22 – sketch.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #22

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Rainbow Chevrons

Of course it had to have a rainbow 😉

I was a little stumped at first with this sketch, but I stretched my brain and decided that chevrons would make a great substitute for the tag/pennant areas on the sketch. Since the right-side one starts lower than the left in the sketch, I decided to make my chevrons go in the opposite direction and stop just above the sentiment frame.

And, just in case you think I have an impossibly good eye, I’ll show you how I cheated!

Usually I figure stuff out as I go – so normally I would have stamped the background and then chosen my sentiment frame. But knowing I had limited space to get all my rainbow in, I decided I needed to cheat.

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Cheat Guide

I picked out my sentiment frame immediately and then partially inked it (i.e., I used a marker and inked just the “inside” of the frame – so it wouldn’t show underneath when I was done) and stamped it first. Then I was able to mask my panel to stamp the chevrons (no way was I going to attempt a one layer with this – and good thing as it took a couple tries) and still see where the frame would be.

As you can see, I did leave a bit of a gap in my stamping to ensure that all my colors showed.

A Round of Smiles

I found another CAS challenge!! This one is CAS on Sunday. Their challenge this week is Round & Round.

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Funky Florals

I made a one-layer card!

I knew I wanted to use a non-white color for my base, so I chose Sweet Blush. Before I picked my other colors, I took a scrap piece of Sweet Blush and stamped some colors on it to see how they would show up. I was surprised that they didn’t really change all that much.

The starburst images and the sentiment are embossed with silver. I added one large rhinestone to the center of the large flower because it needed something.

Thanks for taking a peek!

FYI – Brighten My World

It is time for another For Your Inspiration challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> FYI44.

FYI44_2013-04-18

I love the striking contrast of the sunset colors sandwiched between the silhouetted land and grey clouds. And here is how I used that:

by Karen @ carefree creations - Brighten My World

The yellow panel is sponge-brayered with yellow and orange. I tried to brayer black triangles onto the panel, but it just didn’t look right and seemed too flat. To add depth, I made the triangles with paper and overlapped them – sorta like a curtain.

The lamp is heat embossed with silver and fussy-cut. I attached it with dimensionals – one under the bulb (tucked into the corner where the black triangles meet) and one at the tippy top attaching it to the card base.

Banner Birthday

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge -> #21 – colors.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #21

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations: Birthday Banner

I wasn’t sure what to do at first, but I knew I liked the color combination. So, as I do when I’m stumped, I went to my index. When I spotted my Hearts a Flutter set, I knew I had the card.

The stripped banner pieces are taped onto the card base, but only along the top edge – and the bottom bits are “fluffed” to add dimension. (“Fluffed” just means curling the edges without bending the card stock.) The wave-pattern banner pieces are adhered with dimensionals. I glued the twine in place.

My card base is a regular A2 size, so this will need to be hand-delivered or mailed in a larger envelope to accommodate those overhanging banner pieces.

CASology Word

Guest Designer Badge

I’m so happy – I was asked to be a guest designer for CAS-ology! And this week’s cue was so fun to work with!

Week 40 - WORD

I actually made a couple cards for the challenge. But first up is the one I chose to have on the challenge blog:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Word Up

There are so many directions you can go with the cue “word”, but my first thought was the phrase “word up” (there’s an old 80s song). Of course that phrase also makes me think of Word Girl (I have two girls that love PBS Kids), but I wasn’t sure what kind of card I could create that would incorporate our favorite Lexicon superhero.

Using the original phrase, I wanted an urban feel to the card. I created a conversation and added a bit of brick texture to anchor the die cuts.

The brick background is a full-size image. To get just a partial inking, I broke out my sponges – that way it has a nice fade to the edges.

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Word, Bird

Another thought that came to mind for the cue “word” was the phrase “what’s the word, bird”. I actually have a sentiment stamp that says that, so I had to use it! I paired it with a cute little bird and added color with pattern paper.

Since the pattern paper was so bold and colorful, I left my stamping black and white – enabling it to pull the focus.

I hope you play along too!

CAS Colours & Sketches - Challenge #20

And here is my take:

by Karen @ Carefree Creations - Birthday Words

I turned the sketch sideways and used words for the ‘strips’ – and bonus, it’s a one-layer card!

This was a bit daunting. I really really wanted to trim it down and layer it on a white card base – there is just something about the shadow created that makes it ok with me, lol. One layer cards are HARD!

At first I stamped 2 flowers per word, but that didn’t work. So I went with the rule-of-three and added a flower per word.

To finish it off and add a bit of dimension and interest, I added a rhinestone to one flower per line.
