hello | by karen @ carefree creations

Sorry….I’m up late trying to get this card posted and my brain is dead tired. I’m not going to write much as I’m pretty sure it won’t be coherent.

The sun and house are paper pieced. Otherwise, this is a very simple card!

I hope you join us at CAS Colours & Sketches!

Thanks for stopping by!

Make a Wish

Make a Wish | by karen @ carefree creations

Man, I have been on a roll with one-layer cards this week. Normally I find them daunting, but these past few ones have just kinda created themselves.

I know you may be wondering where the orange and yellow from the color combo are – they are the flame. The candle is stamped in two parts – the outline and the pattern fill. When I stamped the the outline, I inked the wick & flame piece with orange. Then, when stamping the flame, I first stamped in yellow and then went back and did a partial inking of the flame image with orange. Of course then I added a tiny bit of stickles, so it is pretty hard to see…but those colors are there!

After stamping the images and the “make a wish” sentiment, I was going to call it done, but it didn’t feel completed – I think because I had offset it, but probably a little too much so it just felt off center. I decided a line or something from the image to the card edge would solve the problem, but I didn’t like the feel of such a solid thing as a line. I did think about bling or a line of dots, but I thought a secondary sentiment would be perfect.

The secondary sentiment had to be pieced together. There is no “on” in the set, so I had to make it with selective inking of an “o” and “n”. The “your” and “day” are part of the same sentiment, but there was an extra word in the middle that I didn’t have room for; so that required selective inking too. It isn’t very straight, but it works.

Pocketful of Sunshine

And here is my take:

Pocketful of Sunshine | by karen @ carefree creations

Double challenges are always very hard for me. I had some ideas for this combo, but my stamps didn’t want to cooperate (they didn’t fit the sketch like I thought they might). I was pleasantly surprised when this pocket image fit so nicely (I thought it would be too small).

The sun image is empty in the middle – and the set did not include a circle stamp to fill it in. I really needed the sun to have more weight on the card, so I pulled out another set which included a polka dot circle that fit quite nicely. I thought the polka dots went well with the pattern paper I had already picked out. It was hard to line up the inner circle inside the already stamped sun, but thankfully the bad spacing is hidden by the pocket!

Speaking of the pocket, that is all Pacific Point ink – I did a second-generation impression for the solid pocket and then over-stamped, full strength, with the stitch lines. I think the set has a die for the pocket, but I forgot that when I stamped it, so I had to cut it out by hand (thankfully, since it is all straight lines, it wasn’t fussy).

Dinner Together | karen @ carefree creations

Once again, I had a few ideas for this sketch. The Monday challenge at Simon Says Stamp pushed me to this card.

I pulled out some utensil dies to create a border, found a couple sentiments that worked with the dinner theme, and added the final touch — a little flower accent to add a pop of color and interest.

The water background is watercolored with distress inks. The frame is popped up over the background – as is the jellyfish and sentiment.

You are so Sweet

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge: #164 – sketch (and it is requested the square shape is part of your card – i.e., don’t change it to a circle, or star, etc).

CC&S_2016-03-10_#164_USE SQUARE!!

Such a simple, classic sketch, but boy did I take forever to come up with my card! I think because it felt like the options were endless, I just couldn’t decide which direction to go. I really didn’t want to just stamp something on a square and be done…I wanted something a bit different – but still CAS. I love CAS, but sometimes I find it hard to keep it simple (usually only when I *have* to, figures, eh?). Anyway…

I finally came up with the idea to take an object and do an artistic impression of it. Watermelon came to mind and I thought I could make that work.

So Sweet | by karen @ carefree creations

The card base is watercolor paper – as are the square and pinked mat.

I painted green stripes on the card base and then did a gradient pink wash on the square. I liked the pinked edge for the mat as it made me think of the way watermelons can be cut open.

I used a brush marker to make little seeds along the bottom of the pink panel.

The “sweet” is die cut using an alphabet set. The letters have longer swoops at their ends, but I cut them down so I could squish the letters closer together.

Lucky Me

And here is my take:

Lucky Me | by karen @ carefree creations

In the spirit of challenge, I used a St. Patrick’s Day stamp set – though my resulting card can be given any time.

I went very simple with the layout. And you may be wondering where my Mint Macaroon is…it is very subtle – just the dots between the sentiment lines. The rhinestone is also a very good match for it, but you can’t really tell (especially after putting it on the brighter green image).

I did a bit of image piecing too. The stem for the image was a word – and I didn’t like it for this card. So I inked up just the clover head, then I inked up just the stem from a different image in the same set.

You're Awesome | by karen @ carefree creations

I started this card by picking what I wanted as the circles. Once I chose stars I looked for a sentiment. My stamp index is digital – and so not to scale…which is why my sentiment is a bit smaller than I would have preferred, but really it is a perfect sentiment, so I kept with it. To add a bit to it, I added a gold mat.
