Be Mine, Valentine

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge: #159 – colours.

And here is my take:

Valentine | by karen @ carefree creations

When I first saw these colors, I thought about the conversation hearts that are appearing everywhere this time of year.

I added a few clear embossed hearts to link the hearts together, and then some sequins to add some dimension and sparkle. I ended up covering most of it, but I like how the embossing powder darkens the color hearts a tad.

The die cut sentiment is two layers.

The front rectangle in the sketch was such an expanse, it was begging me to do a little watercoloring. I honestly don’t know why it took me so long to jump on the Distress Ink bandwagon, but I am loving these things…it really makes this sorta technique way easy!

I did not adhere the word die-cut fully. And I like how it feels a bit fun and carefree.

Cheers with a Cherry on Top | by karen @ carefree creations

When I saw those colors the first things I saw was ice cream (but then I can see ice cream in just about anything). Even knowing what I was going to stamp, it took me some time to figure out how. When I was playing around with composition, I had two cones bumping each other and that reminded me of two glasses doing “cheers”; I liked that concept. The clincher was pairing “cheers” with the rest of the sentiment…I loved that!

The “cheers” sentiment is a die-cut. I layered 3 cut-outs together…that really is so much easier than trying to cut and place tiny bits of dimensional adhesive.

I don’t know what happened, but my mojo went on vacation a couple weeks ago and hasn’t been seen since. This card took a few iterations, and I finished it just in time!

I die cut an oval aperture from the purple cardstock. That, and the strips of pattern paper are attached to a white card base. The sentiment is stamped directly on the card base.

Blue Birthday Flower | by karen @ carefree creations

I thought these colors would be good for a flower. The outer layer of the flower is blended with Marina Mist and Pool Party. That layer is also cut out and popped-up for a little dimension.

And here is my take:

Yuletide Blessings - by karen @ carefree creations

If you can’t see it, then let me first say that I rotated the sketch 180° (or flipped it upside down).

I guess I have Christmas on the brain…when trying to decide what to use as the two arrow-things in the sketch I saw pine branches and couldn’t move away from that.

I really wanted a plaid pattern at the top, but I’m using what I have! The paper has “cranberry crisp” listed as a color. I have the stitched ribbon that came out with that color, but oh boy it does not match very well. Instead I dug into my red ribbon box and found some dark red twine. I thought the twine added to the rustic feel of the card (or um makes the card feel rustic….something like that anyway).

Good Thoughts - by karen @ carefree creations

I always see bees when yellow and black are together, but I really didn’t want that this time. So I thought, “OK, if black is just a sentiment color that leaves yellow – lots of it….what can I use.” And of course sunshine came to mind.

I got to use some new to me stamps and dies and it was fun to put this together!

I really had no idea that the sun image from Kinda Eclectic was so huge – but I love that it is!

Sketchy Halloween by karen @ carefree creations

I had this idea in my head for a week before the challenge but I just couldn’t carve out the time until this weekend.

The card base is 3 3/4 wide and the black panel is 4 1/4 – so it will fit perfectly in an envelope.

Autumn Birthday Leaves - by karen @ carefree creations

Love these colors together! Honestly, I wasn’t sure at first, but I did my research and came up with an idea. Once I started stamping and putting it together, I really fell in love with the colors!

The colors are pretty intense. To keep the card cheery and fun, I used a light color base. Also, the leaves are kissed with patterns which gives texture but also removes some of the color so it isn’t as intense.

The sentiment is stamped directly on the card base; the frame is popped-up. I did mask the sentiment are off just in case the leaves wanted to peek through.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #89

And here is my take:

Best Wishes - by karen @ carefree creations

I had many ideas for this sketch – another versatile one. But when I found out my niece just got engaged, I had to go with this idea!

I used some old paper flowers for the border – but you could easily stamp and cut them, or use die-cuts or punches. These flowers I got in the bridal section of a place like Michaels (it has been so long ago it very well could have been that store, but I just don’t remember). They have the most wonderful pearl shine to them! I thought about adding tiny gems to the centers when I was done, but I really prefer this soft, understated look.

For the sentiment, I didn’t have much in the way of ‘Congratulations’ that would fit in an oval (especially that orientation), so I chose to go with ‘Best Wishes’. The image has lots of flourishes around the actual words. I originally stamped it full-on in a dark grey ink, but it was just too much. Instead, I inked the stamp with a soft grey ink and then went back with a medium grey marker and colored the words. I’m really happy with how that turned out!

Hmmm….I guess now I can use this engagement as a reason to look into wedding sets (and maybe even baby) – I haven’t had a need for them until now!

Oh, and the curve is just hand-drawn on the back-side of the pattern paper and then cut-out by hand — which should explain why my curve goes the opposite way than the sketch; I drew it correctly on the back forgetting it would be flipped when I turned the paper right-side up (sadly, I did think about it before I drew it, and I still got it wrong!).
