Apple Core

Apple Core | by karen @ carefree creations

I’m playing along with the Less is More: Fruit challenge. Very simple card, with lots of white space.

Since the sentiment is so long, I had to cut it in pieces to get it to stamp in a curve.

Humble Pie

Today I’m playing along with the CASology: Pie challenge. When I was trying to decide what to use, I thought through a bunch of phrases with pie and came up with humble pie.

Granted my card isn’t very humble, but it is where I started:

I wasn’t sure what to stamp with the sentiment I chose, so I found another challenge: Paper Smooches: Flowers.

Life Needs Background Music

I’m playing along again at Sisterhood of Snarky Stampers. This week’s challenge is music.

It took me a long time to find something, but the internet helped!

Life Needs Background Music | karen @ carefree creations

When I couldn’t come up with my own idea, I searched the internet and found a quote similar to this and knew it would be perfect (I have a two teenage kids, and while we’ve never said these words, the sentiment is there!).

I’ve said before I prefer to make cards that I can use – even when I’m playing a snarky challenge (thankfully my family is fully aware, and mostly appreciative, of my sarcastic/snarky personality).

The tape frame was inspired by this awesome card by Jenny.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Blessing | karen @ carefree creations

Yesterday I sat down to make thanksgiving cards for my girls. I decided to use this adorable turkey image. And since the latest Paper Smooches Challenge is Gold, I foiled the tail feathers (as well as the band around the hat).

In addition, the layout is from the Fresh Made Sketches #214 challenge.

My final card is 4″ wide.

Playful Whirlygigs

Whirlygigs | by karen @ carefree creations

This card is for the CAS(e) This Sketch #149 challenge.

CASeThisSketchBadge

I used the same technique on this card as the one I posted earlier. I stamped the images and clear embossed them. Next was sponging with distress inks. Last, use an iron to remove the embossing.

This card came together in an interesting way. I created the focal panel using bright inks…but somewhere along the way a few dark dots appeared (I assume I just wasn’t careful while making the previously posted card). So I decided to add a few more splatter bits in a blue/green/grey color. I also knew that I wanted to extend the line of the sentiment, so I had to pick a color for which I had a marker. Although the splatter I added is a bit brighter than the mistake dots, I think you can’t tell unless you can get close and really look at it. And looking at the image online you can barely see the splatter anyway!

For the sentiment, I selectively inked the word and right swoop, but not the left swoop. Then I used a marker to continue the left swoop all the way to the edge of the panel.

I chose the linear pattern for the background because I’ve read that curves love lines (I think it is Susan Rahaila that says it).

The final size for this card is 5 1/2 x 3 3/4.

Stamping for fun. I know I already posted today, but this one is for challenges which end tomorrow.

This card is for both CASology – Vehicle and CAS(e) This Sketch #148.

I wanted to do something a bit different for “vehicle” – and while browsing my index, I immediately stopped at this rocket ship!

The sentiment is hand-written.

Teen Birthday

Teen Gadges - by karen @ carefree creations

My oldest kiddo turns 15 today! Like most teens, they thrives on electronic devices: cell phone, laptop, video games, etc.

I recently painted their bedroom a really pretty shade of light purple – so I thought I would start with that. I’ve been wanting to do a random background again, and I thought the gadgets would be a great backdrop.

I knew I wanted the sentiment to be spotlighted, but part of the background, so I stamped that image onto the card base first and added the other images around it. I then stamped the main image onto white paper and cut it out to pop up over the background image.

The last touch I added was to put “15” in the screens of the phone and music players.

Conversations with a Teen

Llamas - by karen @ carefree creations

I created this card for the Paper Smooches Designer Drafts sketch challenge. In case anyone is wondering – those crabs are hand-cut. To get the “insides”, I trimmed along the claws. Once you glue the images down you can’t tell at all.

I’m lucky to have a good relationship with my teen. And no one but her will understand this card. Have you ever had a weird conversation that meanders through just about every topic and it gets so ridiculous that you only need to say the first topic to remember how funny it was? Yep, that is what this card represents.

Autumn Birthday Leaves

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge: #90 – colours.

CCS_2014-09-04_#90

And here is my take:

Autumn Birthday Leaves - by karen @ carefree creations

Love these colors together! Honestly, I wasn’t sure at first, but I did my research and came up with an idea. Once I started stamping and putting it together, I really fell in love with the colors!

The colors are pretty intense. To keep the card cheery and fun, I used a light color base. Also, the leaves are kissed with patterns which gives texture but also removes some of the color so it isn’t as intense.

The sentiment is stamped directly on the card base; the frame is popped-up. I did mask the sentiment are off just in case the leaves wanted to peek through.

Pastel Botanicals

It is time for another CAS Colours & Sketches challenge. Check out the latest challenge: #88 – colours.

CAS Colours & Sketches Challenge #88

And here is my take:

Pastel Botanicals - by karen @ carefree creations

Such sweet colors for this challenge. I admit, the first thing I thought of was a baby card…but I don’t need one of those. Instead I went with a birthday theme.

With the yellow and green colors being pastel, I knew the brown would be the focal, so I kept that reserved for the sentiment. I chose to use the colors to create a background.
